THE OGBONA THAT FLOWS IN MY VEINS VOL.2 by John Odior Anaweokhai PhD

THE OGBONA THAT FLOWS IN MY VEINS VOL.2 by John Odior Anaweokhai PhD. Ogbona ni Mhakhena. Evho ghi ghie. My obsession with Ogbona has no known rival and it flows in my veins, to say the least, is profusely none stop. Years of studying, traveling and ingratiating with people of diverse cultures have not gotten it attenuated. If at all, they have served as elixir, causing it to find expression in whatever I do and without being immodest, I am unreservedly unapologetic about it. Of course, I make no pretense of being ethnocentric or confining some air of superiority on my culture over others ,nonetheless, I find the culture of my people very unique ,appealing and capable of being exported to make the world a better place for all. This is not claiming faultlessness and supernaturalism ,immune from the conventional frailties to which every mortal or culture, owe some subjection. It is just that the deep sense of honesty ,respect for norms and values ,sanctity of human life, sense of communality, synergy, humility and respect for hard work and human dignity which shaped one’s being ,are scarce treasures in many other clines .Most time, I cannot but question my sense of maturity ,especially when certain fond memories of my formative years, in picturesque mode, rush unrestrainedly through my being. There is no better embodiment of human virtues of communality synergy honesty, sincerity and unity of mind and purpose than Oru traditional farming practice among Ogbona people. It is a kind of co-operative labour contract where members jointly render farming services to one another. A synthetization of efforts among people of like minds to advance farming objectives. It is a system where a minimum of two people come together to work in each other farmland on rotational basis. It is like the two guiding principles in accounting which says for every debit entry ,there is a corresponding credit entry. In other words, when one follows you to work in your farm, you are in the person’s debit book of record , at the designated time, that debt must be repaid in equal measures. Though I had 2 other crews, my last oru crew members were made up of late bros. Adamson Aikabeli, late Eramha Odayeamoh Aikabeli, bros Philip Adebisi Odior and Mallam Shiab David Eghieye. At the initial stage of our endeavor, safe for Bros Philip Odior who was well aware of the stuff I was made of, others doubted my mettle, considering my age. Thank God for their acknowledgement of the fact that any child who washes his hands very clean is free to dine with elders. Their doubts were soon laid to rest the very day we blazed the trail in bros Philip Odior’s farm. I learnt vital lesson that very day, though, we were 5 in number, bro Adamson was the unofficial leader of the crew and as captain of sort, he took the first portion of about 12 feet to clear and as a new kid on the block, I was asked to take mine next to his. He was a bulldozer when it came to bush Cleary but I matched him side by side and at the end, he gave me hand. One unique thing about oru is that it is not just a transactional relationship for the purpose of advancing one another’s cause like IGUADE or paid labour, much more than that, it is about shared value and vision, the need to be one another’s keeper. Your crew members are not just business partners, they are your brothers and sister who you can confide in and they have your back at any time. They are your dependable allies whose counsels can be sort and relied on when the chips are down. They are to call you to order when you are going astray. They are the ones who you parents or spouses can walk to and unburden themselves about pressing issues. Up till today, some of those crew members at the different stages of my life remain my best friends at home. Oru has well laid out three major principles christened herein as the trinity of oru. The evening preceding one’s turn, that member must ensure every member is hail and healthy by going to wish them good night rest (LEGHUE). Very early in the morning, he must ensure each member wakes up very sound too by going round once again to remind them of the day’s business ( KEMAI). Finally, when it is time to go to farm and to forestall any form of eventuality, one might be forced to go round once more to mobilize his crew members for the day’s business (VUEMA). Rule 2 and 3 can be observed together and most times, only rule 1 deserves strict observance but not among members who have come a long way. Unfortunately, when the unexpected happens, one would be asked if the above rules, especially rule 1 and 2 were observed. Oru helps to cover up for one’s area of deficiency. Some people are extremely good at Cleary compared to digging while some have expertise in digging but not so much at Cleary. When such a pair synergized, one would make up for the other’s weakness and the result is always in the superlatives. Oru is nothing short of practical demonstration of the teaching of the good book that we should do unto others as we wish them do onto us. It is the law of harvest cast into section. If one knew that how well he works in other people’s farm would be reciprocated in equal measure when it gets to his turn, there is no room for drama. The philosophy of Oru was seen applied in every facet of life in Ogbona, ranging from thrifting (ADASI) to how one lives not only with his neighbours but also strangers. I feel proud to have come out of a place where time tested and honoured principles of interdependence, honesty, diligence, fairness, equity, justice

The paying of lip service to education by successive governments in Nigeria  has contributed to the fallen of education standard in most parts of the country.   The result of this negligence on the part of government is obvious. Many of the State owned Schools are without qualified teachers, Vital Resource Centre, good Science laboratories as well as teaching aids .The consequences are both for the students and the host community.   Commissioning the project, the Catholic Bishop of Auchi Diocese, His Lordship,  Most Reverend Dr. Gabriel Dunia prayed for the donors and their partners  for yielding to the Clarion call of the Community.   Bishop Dunia appreciated the donors for their love towards the progress and well-being of the Students of the school and the community.   The  Okphe Ukpi of Ogbona,  HRH  Willy Idode  appealed to the State Government to accept the challenge of putting the projects to profitable use. RENOVATION AND UPGRADE OF OGBONA PRIMARY HEALTH CENTRE (DISPENSARY)

The attached report marks our logical stop to our efforts for the Ogbona Primary Healthcare Centre (PHC) renovation and upgrade, except we have more funding to expand our scope. (The PHC is directly opposite the Saint Johns Catholic church/Oboarekpe Primary School) Below are some of the areas we were able to touch. Floor tiles for the new and old buildings Painting of the old/new buildings Electrical/plumbing repairs – underground water tank, soak away etc. Hospital bed Hospital beddings: – mattresses, pillows, bedsheets, pillow cases etc. Repairing of the community generator nearby PHC and connecting the generator to the PHC buildings Repair of doors/keys and new doors Portioning of delivery room to surgery & delivery room Provision of signboard, gate to PHC etc. Provision of wheel chair, stretcher etc. Provision of office tables, chairs, benches, plastic chairs and misc. items Equipping the surgery/setup We are using this opportunity to thank all the donors for this project. May the good Lord bless you and your families. Those who were unable to support us this time, may the Lord provide for you and your family abundantly.   RENOVATION AND UPGRADE OF OGBONA PRIMARY HEALTH CENTRE (DISPENSARY) Ogbona is one of the four villages that make up Avhianwu Clan and is a busy and rusty town founded about 1892 in Etsako Central Local Government Area of Edo State. The town is one of the agro-based communities in Edo State, where yam, groundnut, maize, cassava and cashew nuts are farmed in commercial quantity. However, despite being one of the state’s food baskets, Ogbona is mostly known for constantly producing top-rate musicians in and around Edo. These musicians, known for their rich melody, philosophical composition, rhythms and emotional music, are yet to be matched in that area. The population of the community, based on school enrollment and past census is about 18,500 people. The community has 3 public primary schools, 6 private primary/secondary schools, one public secondary school.   RENOVATION & UPGRADE OF THE PRIMARY HEALTH CENTRE (DISPENSARY/MATERNITY). The Ogbona Community Primary Health Centre, commonly referred to as Ogbona Maternity Hospital was approved alongside three others in March, 1959 and was commissioned in 1961 by the Local Council Authority when Chief M.C.K Orbih was the councilor representing Avianwu ward. The total cost of the project was One thousand Pounds (€1,000), which was twice the cost of that of Jagbe. The Primary Health Centre is currently in need of urgent repairs and possible upgrade. The structures which have been in place for many years and now in states of disrepair are in dire need of urgent repairs and re-furnishing. Currently, the PHC is the most readily available medical facility to the community.  After a thorough feasibility study was carried out by the community leadership, it was discovered that a little effort was required to repair and upgrade the facility in terms of infrastructure and basic clinical/surgical equipment. The renovation work was initiated by the Okphe Ukpi of Ogbona, Chief Willy Idode. He personally supervised the renovation work and upgrade in order to maximize the available resources. We appealed to individuals and corporate organizations to sponsor certain items on the list or sponsor part or the entire renovation/upgrade work.  We could do more if we have the fund. Although much progress has been made in the areas of repairs of the infrastructure, the facility requires to be minimally equiped with upgraded clinical/surgical items. To this end, it has been suggested that we set up a surgical theatre as the place is now conducive for carrying out basic surgical operations.  It is expected that a surgeon/surgeons will be coming around from time to time to carry out surgeries as soon is the facility becomes functional instead of going to Fugar or Auchi for such medical services. The need to see to the realization of the refurbishing and upgrading of the Ogbona PHC prompted The Ogbona Elites Forum (OEF) to shelve its 2021 Annual Free Medical Outreach, which has held twice since 2018 and collaborate with the community to refurbish and upgradee the Ogbona Primary Healthcare Centre (Dispensary/Maternity). As at this moment, much work has been done and more requires to be done. Dispensary/Maternity, as it is fondly called has received a new lease of life to the glory of God and to the gratification and benefit of Ogbona Community and its environ.     STATE OF THE HEALTHCARE CENTRE BEFORE RENOVATION ONGOING RENOVATION AT THE OGBONA PRIMARY HEALTHCARE CENTRE ETSAKO CENTRAL LOCAL GOVERNMENT CHAIRMAN AND COUNCIL OFFICIALS ON INSPECTION OF THE RENOVATION WORK AT OGBONA PRIMARY HEALTH CENTRE, MARCH 01, 2021. PRIMARY HEALTHCARE CENTRE IMPROVEMENT PROGRAMME To the glory of God and through the efforts of the good people of this forum, the Primary Healthcare Centre (Dispensary/Maternity) at home is receiving a new lease of life after decades of neglect. May the good Lord bless each and everyone of us, Amen. Having seen the community effort put in there, the HOS has approved that a surgery theatre be set up there to handle surgical operations. Honestly, we have tried without success to convince UBTH management in Benin to set up the theatre in their hospital at home to handle such cases. The number of our people who go to Jattu and Auchi all the time for minor operations is much. Having the theatre in the Healthcare Centre equipped to handle surgical operations would save our people money, mother & child at birth and the stress of going to Auchi all the time.   THE NEW SURGERY THEATRE List of items required to set up the theatre 1. Allis forcep x 4 2. Babcock forcep x 4 3. Ambo bag (Adult x 1, child x 1) 4. Set of dilators x1 5. Artery forcep – (straight and curve) a. Medium x 4 b. Mosquito x 4 c. large x 4 6. OGBONA COMMUNITY SALUTE ALFRED IMHOMOH AND FAMILY

OGBONA COMMUNITY SALUTE ALFRED IMHOMOH AND FAMILY A few weeks ago, we were celebrating Kingsley Imhomoh for lending a helping hand to Ogbona community. Today we are celebrating his father Alfred Imhomoh Many of us grew up to know Alfred Imhomoh as a bona fide Ogbonan, as he lived, married and raised his family in Ogbona until he emigrated to the USA some years ago to ply his trade as medical personnel. He so blended with everybody in the community that it became something of a shock when we got to know that he is from Irekpai in Uzairue clan. Alfred and members of his family still see Ogbona as their home and all Ogbonans as their brothers and sisters. Alfred sent some money as palliatives to people at Ogbona. The breakdown is as follows: 4 eldest women, N5,000 each;  4 eldest men, N5,000 each; Chief Idode N5,000; Mrs. J .I Odior, N3,000;  Dada Oba Uwami, N3,000;  Alikalika’s wife from Weppa N2,000;  Patrick Ivhaluogwe, his former landlord N2,000; Onamana Utu Igbadumhe N2,000. According to information available to us, he extended the same benevolence to Iraokhor, Ayogwiri, Irekpai, Ugbenor, Ikabigbo and Idatto communities, thus showing his large-heartedness and love for all. We thank Alfred and his family and continue to hold them in prayer especially at this time of COVID 19. One of our sons (anonymous) donated the sum of N200,000 to the community for palliatives for the COVID 19. May the blessing of the Lord be with him and family.

KINGSLEY IMHOMOH LENDS A HELPING HAND TO OGBONA COMMUNITY

KINGSLEY IMHOMOH LENDS A HELPING HAND TO OGBONA COMMUNITY As the saying goes, ” Ones home is where he feels accepted and secured.”  We all grew up to know Alfred Imhomoh as a “son of the soil”, a bona fide Ogbonan, as he lived, married and raised his family in Ogbona until he emigrated to the USA some years ago to ply his trade as medical personnel. He so blended with everybody in the community that it became something of a shock when we got to know that he is from Irekpai in Uzairue clan. Till date, Alfred and members of his family still see Ogbona as their sweet home and all Ogbonans as their brothers and sisters. To any Ogbonan, Alfred and his family have in so many ways demonstrated their love for Ogbona community and any Ogbonan with whom their paths crossed. It is the same spirit that has propelled one of his sons, Kingsley Imhomoh, who is also domiciled in the United States to, once again, showcase the family’s love for Ogbona community by donating Rice 50kg 5 Bags, Beans 50kg 5 Bags and Indomie noodles Carton 25. The pictures and videos show the Alfred Imhomoh’s family, Kingsley Imhomoh and the sharing of the donated foodstuffs to 280 Ogbona widows.
